American Idol Top 24 Revealed?

Last night’s American Idol show began with 71 contestants that were reduced to 46 and ended with 7 of the Top 24 revealed. The remaining 17 of the top 24 will be revealed tonight.

Thus far the 7 who have been revealed are as follows:

1) Big Mike Lynche, the personal trainer whose wife recently delivered a baby girl.
2) Didi Benami who is singing her heart out in memory of her best friend who passed away recently.
3) Katlin Epperly
4) Casey James
5) Aaron Kelly – The 16 year old who was raised by his Aunt
6) Lee Dewyze who asserted his self confidence when he was told it appeared it was lacking. He spoke up for himself in a respectful manner and as it turned out, his place was not really in jeopardy.
7) Todrick Hall

The show ended here but rest assured that all of those that are still waiting in the agony room are extremely talented. All of the judges from Simon to Randy have admitted that this year has produced the greatest pool of talent they ever had to choose from.

There’s probably already a few contestants that could make it big in the music industry that have already been eliminated that could actually at some point in the future look back on their road to success and prove to be an embarrassment to Idol. And I suppose its only a matter of time before that happens.

Jessica Furney and Shelby Dressel were both let go last night and I suspect they both have that potential. Here are a few we’re watching closely that are still alive and will discover their fate with the idol judges on tonight’s show:

    Andrew Garcia,
    Katie Stevens,
    Lilly Scott,
    Tori Kelly,
    Ashley Rodriguez,
    Tyler Grady,
    Janell Wheeler,
    Thaddeus Johnson and
    Crystal Bowersox

Good luck to all of the contestants. Congratulations to those who are in and for those who are not, keep your head up. You have nothing to be ashamed of. You were up against some fierce competition and hopefully you have had an experience of a lifetime.

See you all tonight!

Group Night – More Fun or Friction?

Last night’s American Idol format was what is commonly referred to as “Group Night” because all of the remaining contestants form into small groups and perform together as a “group”. Needless to say, this creates a very challenging environment.

Many folks (myself included) feel that this is unfair. Although I can understand why AI would want to impose this format. After all, this gives the judges a chance to see which contestants have additional singing abilities that are not observable in a solo performance, such as the ability to sing harmony etc. Keep in mind that as the show nears its conclusion, the remaining contestants that make it to the top 12 (I think) perform together every week in skits that include harmonies and choreographed dancing.

But during last night’s show… many times it seemed to me as if some people were put through because their group as a whole sounded good, while others were sent home because their group as a whole… not so good.

If you watched last night’s show I’d be interested to hear your views below.

If you missed it, here’s a brief recap:

(Michael Lynche) Big Mike’s wife delivered a beautiful baby girl and made it through along with Tim Urban (another member of his group called “Team Awesome“). However, Seth Rollins was sent home. Sorry to see him go. I personally thought he was one that should have made it through. I believe the other member of this group was Michael Castro. He also was sent home.

The group called “Faith” which consisted of 3 beautiful ladies all made it through (they did sound excellent) consisted of Ashley Rodriguez, Charity Vance and Michelle Delamor.

Neopolitan consisted of Liz Rooney, Jessica Cunningham, Paige Miles and Thaddeus Johnson. All through.

Destiny’s Wilde: Artheria “Theri” La’Bry, Siobhan Magnus, Todrick Hall, and Jareb Lieber. All through

The Mighty Rangers: Tori Kelly and Maddie Penrose made it through although the group performance was very poor. Mark Labriola and Kimberly Kerbow were both eliminated. Kim forgot her lyrics which seems to be the ultimate idol sin from what I gather from Simon. Here’s another example of what I said above. I liked both of them and they’re now out.

Phoenix: Moorea Masa, Kat Nestel, Ben Honeycutt, Jermaine Sellers, and Jeffery Goldford. There must have been some friction in this group. Kat decided to bail before the performance leaving the others appearing unprepared. Moorea and Ben were both eliminated while Jermaine and Jeff survived a less than stellar performance.

3 men and a baby (I laughed when I heard their name)
Andrew Garcia did it again. He’s got to be a favorite and from I gathered from next week’s previews Katie Stevens may be as well. Also in their group was J.B. Ahfua. All through.

MIDDLE C: Janell Wheeler, Casey James and Jermaine Purifoy. All through.

The Dreamers: This was sad. Mary Powers and I say that literally. lol She made it through but I think we all seen a side of her we didn’t know existed. Also through to the next round from that group is Alex Lambert and Hope Johnson. Erin Hurley and Margo May were sent home.

BIG DREAMS: Amanda Shectman, Tatiana Del, Matt Lawrence, Allen Burton, and Bryce Larson. None through. This may have been a case of poor song choice. I don’t know if they had a choice or not… but if they did… anything else had to have been better. Sorry guys (and gals).

That’s all for today. Please leave your comments below. I appreciate them all. Good luck to all of the contestants whether you have survived up to now or not. We wish you well and keep singing. Its good for the soul.

Ellen DeGeneres Debuts American Idol

Last night Ellen DeGeneres made her debut as the new judge of American Idol, replacing Paula Abdul. Although Paula will be sorely missed Ellen brings a new feel to the judging with her incredible sense of humor and love for all people.

It was apparent early on that even when she had to tell someone that they just didn’t have what it takes to move forward, she did so with a tactful, humorous style unlike anyone we’ve ever seen judging on this show in any capacity before. She brings a uniqueness and freshness to the show that can only make it even more interesting.

Here’s a recap of last night’s show:

Folks, I need a little help with this first contestant… and please accept my apology Katie. I did not catch your last name and I did not have you in my initial list of contestants for Season 9. Sorry.

Katie’s grandmother has Alzheimer’s disease (as does my Mom, so I can relate) and would very much like to succeed while her grandmother still knows who she is. Katie did make it through to the next round. Good Luck Katie.

Skiiboski (Antonio Wheeler) Sang the Temptations classic “Ain’t too proud to beg” however, he did not make it through.

Andrew Garcia sang his own version of Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up” and may I say it was FANTASTIC! I loved it and so did the judges. Kara said it was genius and you’d have to look long and hard to find someone to disagree with her. Congratulations Andrew. Needless to say he made it through to the next round.

Vanessa Wolfe did not make it through, but hey Vanessa you gave it a shot. We wish you well. Keep your head up.

Meagan Wright and Amadeo Diricco were also eliminated. Congratulations on getting this far.

Janell Wheeler was very impressive. Ellen said she was amazing. Congratulations Janell. Onward and upward!

Haeley Vaughn played the guitar and although she said how nervous she was before her performance, did a terrific job and moved on to the next round along with Mary Powers, a 28 year old “Rocker” Mom to a beautiful daughter who Simon attempted to lay claim to… just kidding.

Jay Stone, Justin Williams, Erica Rhodes and Maddy Curtis were also eliminated. I was particularly surprised that Justin didn’t make it through. I thought he was excellent. Good luck to you all and if singing is truly your passion, keep going. American Idol is not the only way to succeed in that business… and just like the sports world, there’s always next year.

Lilly Scott was excellent. Kara called her unique, which if you don’t know by now, is one of the things the judges like.

Big Mike (Michael Lynche) did a great job or as Simon put it “Good” (which in reality means great!). Since this was one of the prerecorded shows, hopefully Mike is a happy Father by now. Congratulations to both of the new parents.

Tim Urban sang David Cook’s “Come Back to Me” (and played guitar).
Tim also moved on. Way to go Tim!

Casey James also played guitar and made it through. He was very impressive and played some pretty fancy guitar licks that Randy acknowledged. Go Casey!

Didi Benami also very impressive. She had to be for Simon to say “I really liked that song, terrific.” Congrats Didi.

Crystal Bowersox had her son’s name tattooed on her back for good luck and she had it although she may not have needed it. She sang “Natural Woman” and Simon said she was “infectious” and that people will like her and that will give her a head start. You go girl!

Please let me know what you thought of last night’s show, the contestants that moved on and perhaps you have a message for those who didn’t. Good luck to all of them!

Don’t forget… there’s another show tonight. See ya there!
